 Studying German this Christmas

Studying German this ChristmasDESPITE its being contiguous and its being the smallest continent in the world, Europe is made of countries which have lots of languages. Because of that, its governing body – the European Union – has made it mandatory for its high school students to acquire another second language. This ruling is relatively new though so the older generation must acquire a second language for themselves to learn at their own volition.

If you are of English or Spanish descent and if you’re assigned here in Germany, you may want to learn German perhaps in a crash course of about two weeks on Christmas. A typical first day in a two-week course in German at any of the German language schools in the country’s major cities – Bonn, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Berlin, etc. – consists of the students being urged to write in German as their first essay for the class. It may sound awkward at first but a person who is really willing to learn German must have the diligence and the hard work to do so. Then the person may be compelled to recite his or her essay in front of the class.

Most of the students in these language schools are already adults so you will definitely have nothing to be embarrassed if you sound awkward before your language instructor who may be younger than you. They are here because they are either employed by Fortune 500 companies or think tanks or even intelligence agencies back in their home countries merely posing as political and economic analysts. Besides, most of the language schools in Germany are of the topmost quality. If you are really serious in studying German, then visit first the local Ministry of Education in your area to get the list of the accredited language schools.

In a German language school, each student will be assigned a pair. After class hours, the pair is urged to help each other out. In other cases, German language schools will even organize excursions where students are immersed in crowded places. They will then try to overhear conversations and the students are urged to report back to their language instructors to what extent they have understood the German conversations. In still other cases, students are assigned a language exchange student online. These language exchange students also pay tuition just like the regular students in a German language school. But here’s the catch – instead of learning German, they will teach German to the regular students. The purpose of the language exchange students is to learn the native language of the students. For example, if you come from Spain, it is likely that the German language student assigned to you would like to learn Spanish or any of its dialects like Basque or Catalan.

Another tactic is for you to be immersed with a German family for your entire stay here. The German family is already pre-screened by the German language school so you don’t have to worry about anything regarding that. They will help you out in acquiring the German language. If you eat at the home of your German host, the normal courtesy is for you to chip in. However, if your study here is charged by your employer, you can have this reimbursed.

 Taking German

Taking GermanGERMAN is a very romantic language. Try to tell that to the Germans themselves. But even Germans are taught another second language. Europe, being the smallest continent in the world and being a contiguous one with people not speaking the same language, has ordered all its high school students to appreciate other European languages. The natural choice of the people here is English because English is the international language of aviation although it is commonly used only across the continent at the British isle.

Despite that, German continues to flourish as a language because Germany has lots of businesses. It is also important to the international business scene thus, many foreign investors also need to adjust and learn how to speak German. The main industries in Germany are automobiles, metals, chemicals and machinery. Since it exports these products, many end consumers are forced to learn how to speak German.

To achieve this, there are two strategies – it is either to learn the language in a German school here in Germany or learn it in an online school. It is too easy to learn German. After all, they use the same Roman alphabet that we are using. So it’s not that difficult to interrelate with your German language instructor. The most important thing to is pay attention in the class, listen to the language tapes by heart and practice. To achieve this, German language schools usually assign you a partner in the language classes. The partner will have to be a German and who is curious about your native language. In return, you will have to teach him or her a few words in English too she or he will be enticed to teach you German.

German is not hard to learn anyway as it is considered one of the Romance languages since it largely originates from Rome. It is also a language obviously used by the romantics at heart because Germans are said to be one of the mushy people on the planet. But if you want to learn German more, there is a program in a language school that is called an immersion program. You will be immersed with a German family all the six months that you’re in an intensive German language program. The German family will let you cope with you’ve been learning. Expenses for this extra training are charged to your tuition but if you’re here on a study grant by your employers, then there’s no personal cost at all. All you need to do is disburse or liquidate all your expenses so that you won’t have any problem with your school’s accounting.

A typical language program runs on one academic semester only and that’s the basic one. But if you would like to extend your knowledge, you can avail of another six months for the intermediate program and still another six months for the advanced program. Once you’ve graduated from the advanced program, the language institution folks will give you a certificate accrediting that you can already teach German to your native country.

About

German is one of the major languages in the world.  It is spoken by roughly about 90 million to 100 million native speakers.  In addition to this, it is spoken by about another 20 million non-native speakers.  The Guinness Book of Records states that most written text translations are from and to the German language.

Of all languages, German has the most number of different names, depending on the country.  This can be attributed to the fact that the history of both the country (Germany) and the language is quite tumultuous.  Italians refer to the German language as Tedesco while Romanians call it either nemeste or Germana.  Arabs call it an-namsa while Russians refer to the language as nemetskij.  In Finland and Estonia, the German language is called saksa.  The French say allemande while the Spanish say aleman.
